Using the program

Cachelist
You can either control GeoShrine using icons as displayed here, or if you prefer you can use traditional menus instead. This is controlled on the settings page.

The main screen operates in two dimensions. Left/Right switches between the icons in the bottom of the screen, while up/down selects caches in the cachelist.

If an icon is highlighted then the selectbutton will activate the icon, otherwise the selectbutton is used to display the currently selected cache.

Navigation in the cachelist:

  - When alphabetic sorting, press first letter of the cachename that you want to navigate to.
  - When sorting by GCxxxxx, press the letter that follows GC.
  - When sorting by distance use keys 0 = top, 5 = one screen up, 8 = one screen down, 0 bottom.

If a cache name has an line over it, it means that the cache is currently disabled.

Set selected cache as target and display the Grid

Load into or clear the database

Change sort order: Alphabetic by name / by cache-id (GCxxxx) / by distance
Notice that the currently used sorting key is white (Name, GC-id or distance)

Settings

The little antenna in the bottom right corner indicates that a GPS service is available. A gray icon means that GPS is currently disabled or the application is not yet receiving data. The icon is flashing when receiving data.

When in menu-mode it possible to erase a single cache using the menuitem "delete cache".

Grid
The grid displays caches around the current position as white dots, except for the current target that remains flashing (the current target is the cache that where selected when entering the grid). Your position is the green dot located in the middle of the grid, upwards is always the direction in which you are moving *

Distance shows the distance to the target cache.

The compass in the top points towards north.

Use up/down keys to change grid-scale.

* The GPS's in phones tends to be more imprecise than dedicated GPS-devices, this may results in the compass and grid making deflections. Try moving in the same direction for a while, not changing course rapidly. This will help the software even out the deflections.

Database
Use the button "Load file" to load a cache description file into the database. Notice that caches that already exists in the database are not removed, doublets are created.

Use the button "Erase database" to clear all caches from the database.

The bottom of the screen displays status; the current amount of caches in the database and it's maximum size in kb.

Settings
Use GPS: Activates the GPS-device and start receiving coordinates. Only enabled if GPS is available.

Detailed graphics: Remove the fading background etc.

Enable menus: Switch between icon-mode (fullscreen) and menu-mode.

Coordinates: Here it's possible to set fixed coordinates to force a certain position. This only makes sence when GPS is turned off, as the GPS will otherwise overwrite these. When GPS is switched on, the current position is displayed (as it where when entering the settings screen).

Exit the program

Either open the menu on the Cachelist screen and select 'Exit GeoShrine" or press the 'exit key' on the phone. Different phones may use different keys for this, usually you will have to press (and possibly hold) the 'hang up' or 'back' key.

FAQ

Q) The GPS doesn't seem to work?
A) On some phones it may take a while for the GPS to locate the satellites. Therefore, you may want to start the GPS before starting GeoShrine, to follow the satellite search progress.
A2) On SonyEricsson phones pre-start GPS by entering Location Services -> Status info. When GPS is connected, select Minimize. Then start GeoShrine.

Q) Why does my phone keep asking for permission to read files?
A) That's because GeoShrine has not been "signed". This will be sorted out as soon as donations can pay it :)
A2)
On SonyEricsson phones it's possible to grant the program trusted privileges, this will solve the problem (select GeoShrine program, menu -> settings -> trusted)

Q) Why does it take so long to read .gpx files?
A) It can be a demanding task for a phone to parse hundreds of cache descriptions, especially for older phones. Take a look at the speed comparison chart to see what can be expected. A major improvent can often be seen by installing the program in phone-memory instead of on the memory-card.
